Senior Pattern Association Memorial Trophy Winners


This trophy is competed for by the top two pilots from Senior Expert. When it is won three times by a member, he/she may no longer compete in the competition!

It is in remembrance of these departed members:
Curtis Motes

Curtis was in the navy in world war II and was wounded at Iwo Jima. He was an engineer for Southern Railroad retiring in 1984.

He was helpful to Mickey Walker in the early startup days of the Senior Pattern Association.

He started flying pattern in 1970 with Mickey and the two were inseparable. Prior to this he was a race car driver racing around the Atlanta area. He competed and was a major supporter of SPA until his death in 1995.

Dick Austin

Dick retired from Security Mutual Finance. Dick was one of the co-founders of NSRCA, his number was "2". He was a life member of AMA. He lived in Cullman Alabama. He was one of the founding fathers of Cullman Aero-modelers. Dick was one of the original TOC judges and judged many AMA Nationals! He was a strong supporter of SPA.

Dick was a meticulous builder and some of his planes may be seen at Pyramid Hobbies in Cullman Alabama.

Dick was a great friend to many of us old timers!

R.E. Walker

Robert was a long time member of CSRA flyers. He was a past president and supported both SPA and AMA pattern. He ran many contest and had been in RC since the early days. He was the owner of Augusta Hobby Shop for many years. He was always willing to help anyone in any situation and shared his secrets about model airplanes with all.

Jim Jones

Jim was retired from the air force. He was a crew chief on a
C-141. Everyone enjoyed the stories he would tell! He was a major supporter of the Senior Pattern Association. Jim lived in Kingston Tennessee and was a member of the Knox County Radio Control Society of Knoxville. Jim was always ready to go practice and was one of Ed Hartley's major practicing partners.

Ben Oliver

Ben was a retired professor from the University of Tennessee. He was one of the most noted metallurgist in the country. He spoke and shared his knowledge in many countries including China. While there he learned to use chop sticks. He was one Ed's best flying buddies and when they were at contest Chinese food had to be on the menu! He was a major supporter of SPA and attended most of the contest since it's inception.

Ben never met a stranger and was great friend to all who knew him.

Bruce Underwood

Bruce is a radio DJ in Guntersville Alabama doing the early morning show. He has the number one rating in his area for many years. He was the "Voice" of the Tournament of Champions for the last several years of it's  existence. He continues to compete in SPA and AMA competition.

Ed Hartley

Ed is retired from Simplex. He is a former National's winner in D-Expert. He was flying escapements with Jim Fosgate at Fort Campbell KY in the late 1950s. He continues to compete in SPA and AMA competition. He is also the web master of SPA.

Keith Watson

Keith is retired from Lucent Technologies. He is still working in the telecom industries. He was involved in the early days startup of SPA. He continues to compete in SPA and competed for many years in AMA pattern. He is a strong supporter of Senior Pattern.

Mickey Walker

Mickey is the founder of the Senior Pattern Association. He is retired from Walker Engines Inc. Which he started and ran from 1960 to 2002. He then sold the business to his son who continues on. He continues to fly in SAM Old Timer's and SPA. Mickey builds model engines in his home machine shop and does engine work for modelers along with his other activities.
