SPA CONTEST RESULTS
FOR 2004
As always, where pictures are
present click on the picture for a larger view.
AUBURN is
AWESOME!
The Auburn Tigers football team that
embarrassed the Tennessee Vols in Neyland Stadium the weekend of
the Auburn SPA contest as well as the AUBURN PLANESMEN
RC Club.
Both executed with precision the weekend of
October 2 & 3, 2004.
Julian Gomez, Club President, Rick Helmke,
CD, and the Auburn RC Clubbers hosted one of the seasons' most
enjoyable contests.
Just imagine a golf-green 175' wide by
2600' long and you've envisioned the Auburn flying field.
During a break in the flying Saturday
afternoon, a full-scale pilot visited the contest via his Cessna
which he landed with room to spare on this strip. The take-off
consumed about 1/2 the fields length.
Six full rounds were flown.....TOC style
(one flight line)...evidently many pilots elected to skip this
week-end, perhaps to concentrate on next week-ends Masters
contest. The ten of us that contested were treated like HONORED
guests by the club.....imagine, club judging! Contestants just
enjoyed mucho fellowship not to mention "club-provided"
bubbly-libation and delicious Pizza at the field Saturday
evening. Lunch was brought in and provided. yum-yum
Four from the sponsoring group (workers and
sponsors outnumbered contestants) either renewed or joined SPA
for the ensuing year with dues and applications.
One of the highlights of the week-end was
strictly spontaneous...... ( Mama Jane who accompanied your
PIO on Sunday morning was overheard yelling from underneath our
tent.........Hey.....no......no.....get away
from there !!!!! ....naturally, all hustled to
the area curious as can be.......she blushingly relayed....."I
was yelling at that huge black dog
resembled a coalblack Husky that hiested his leg and did......er.....er.....uh,
P E E D on that flight box and the JR transmitter next to it).
The tent was our next door neighbors'........currently the
holder of our SPA MEMORIAL TROPHY! Guess how long it to K
W to grab his roll of paper towels and a bottle of water and
start cleaning chores.
Golly, what a tremendous week-end at a
grand and glorious flying site and one of the most cordial and
helpful RC Clubs in existence.
AUBURN PLANESMEN........we are so humbly
grateful for your' hospitality, your' treats and your execution
of your' initial SPA contest. It was "terrific"!
Can't hardly wait til 2005..........
Gratefully..........................................SPA PIO

HOTLANTA - a "10"
When a SPA pilot wears his "judging" hat....it is part of his
duty to "pick-apart" a maneuver, deducting for errors and record
the resulting score on his score sheet. Sometimes however, it's
just not possible to find any fault in execution to merit a
deduction.....consequently he scribes a "10" for same.
The Hotlanta contest this weekend (July 24 & 25) was just
that.....a solid "10"...commandeered by first time CD John
Baxter who was groomed for his position by none other than SPA's
FOUNDER EMERITUS, Mickey Walker. Baxter was quick to respond to
all his "good-job" sentiments from the crowd with "I didn't do
it by myself, I had a stable full of good PCMA members who were
so unselfish with their time and talents and all
worked as a team, to fulfill the contest chores".
One can only recollect a rainy week-end with only one round
completed due to Thunderstorms and Tornado watches and warnings
in Hotlanta. What an improvement this year....with good strong
winds from the SW to keep the temperatures bearable, six rounds
of competition were flown. Just as the CD in the pilots
briefing said were his intentions, pending weather cooperation.
The weather DID cooperate and the contest started on schedule,
proceeded on schedule and ended on schedule just like clockwork.
There were contests in every class and it just seems that
"bad-luck" is a thing of the past...as I cannot recall anything
even resembling a crash.....there were NO mid-airs. The only
blood shed came from the 2nd and 3rd fingers of Coyote Joes'
hand as a result of it coming in contact with a spinning APC
prop. Believe me, I can appreciate Joe's misery as I am
recuperating from 15 stitches on the left hand from the same
source. Fortunately, we think Joe's cuts were not deep enough
to require stitches.
Gosh, judging from the laughing and "cutting-up", story-swapping
and the like....I regret that I wasn't able to spread into parts
and occupy a seat in every one of the sun-tents. Oh, speaking
of sun tents.....Jim Ivey (who just returned home to Mableton,
GA from the AMA Nats in time to get out his Daddy Rabbit and
compete in SPA)...was the lucky winner of the EZ-UP tent which
was one of the neat raffle prizes given in Hotlanta. Richard
Witt of Cullman, AL won the neat Pro- river II from Radio
South....and Berry Roper of PCMA carried home the $100 gift
certificate from Tower Hobbies.
The transition from AMA's Master schedule to SPA's Expert
schedule is not as easy as one may think....all week prior, Jim
Ivey (whose AMA airplane engine "flamed-out" on him 4 times at
the NATS) had been flying a 3 turn INVERTED spin.....the SPA
spin is UPRIGHT. Thank goodness, when the dawn light sounded
for Jim he still had a few feet of recovery room between his DR
and Terra Firma!
I said to Jim...."you say your' AMA engine quit on you 4 times
at the Nats?" He replied...." Y S".
Speaking of engines and transitions....Keith Watson, current
Memorial Trophy Pilot...negotiated a purchase of a beautiful
Daddy Rabbit complete with all goodies from Jim Rogers....and
flew it Sunday after having flown a 2 stroke on Saturday. Local
engine GURU Bill Collins, sitting with me watching Keith's first
flight with the 4-stroke....remarked....."listen to that, he is
throttling up almost immediately after throttling down on the
reverse outsides....he is accustomed to the 2 stroke having to
"wind-up" whereby the 4S transitions almost immediately". I
listened closely, and sho nuff...that was the case. We all
agreed that Keith is gonna fall-in-love with that 4
stroke....and may be retaining the Memorial Trophy another year
as a result. Look for a good photo on the website and in the
coming newsletter of Keith, Jim and Bill with the beautiful DR.
Results will probably be posted on the SPA webpage in the coming
24 hours along with some good photos.
PCMA....you just couldn't have done any better. It was such a
GREAT contest.....just wished weekends like this were twice as
long.

The NNPRCC of Newport News
Virginia had a recent contest.
Our SPA contest was a great
success today! It ended about 2 hours ago. We had a 3 hour rain
delay, but we were able to get 4 rounds in both Novice and Sportsman
as planned. There were 7 contestants in the Novice class and 4 in
the Sportsman.
Mr. Bill Kite won first place in Sportsman and is coming home with a
nice trophy for his wall. 2nd place in Sportsman was Brian Foveaux
from Newport News; he took a 10% point penalty for flying a non-SPA
aircraft and still came in 2nd...Bill Kite was greatful for that!
3rd place went to Owen Dwire, President of the Newport News Club.
Joe Lupton won 1st Place in Novice with his Killer Kaos. John
(forgot last name) from Williamsburg took 2nd and Dave Fisk from
Newport News took 3rd.
Thanks for your help in spreading the word on our contest! I've got
pictures if you want them for your website. Bill is currently on his
way back to TN, not sure if his van is actually touching the road as
he was pretty happy about winning first place. |

3rd RCRC SPA
Championships
3rd time is
indeed a CHARM
HUNTSVILLE, AL - May 16, 2004: The above caption
is a line voiced over and over by CD Ken Nix following this
weekends' 3rd annual SPA Championships in the Space Capitol of the
Universe.
Saturday was indeed delightful with temperatures in the upper
70's, light breezes straight up and down the runway and four
complete rounds flown in all classes. The activity embellished by
the accomodating laughter and frivolity that is evident at a SUPER
SPA Precision Aerobatic contest.
The weather bureau promised some shower activity on Sunday morning
and it came at the conclusion of Novice's round 5. A vote among
pilots resulted in calling the competition in favor of a GREAT
awards ceremony in the spacious, air-conditioned and comfortable
Chuck Facemire Memorial Clubhouse, one of the numerous amenities
on the RCRC Capt. Wilbourn flying facility.
Results of the competition will be posted within the coming 24
hours on the SPA website and within a couple of days....a number
of good photos will be available on the website.
Nix and associates surprised the participants with awards for
EVERY pilot....yes, ALL that flew and participated "brought home
the personalized photo awards". There were SPECIAL awards for TOP
GUN PILOT.....that flyer was deemed to exhibit the most promise
and skill advancement in the young season, the award sponsored by
Cass Underwoods' Top Notch Trophy Co. was presented Sportsman
Talent Robbie Walker from Cullman, AL.
There was a "Best-Loo**** Bird" award given.....a vote of the
participants resulted in that handsome award going to Steve Byrum
of Cullman, AL for his lovely Curare which sports a painted
fuselage, monokoted wings and stab and tri-colored wheelpants. Not
only looks good but is a solid performer for Steve.
A "Hard-Luck" award complete with polished Tru-Turn Spinner
mounted above the broken APC prop and golden colored engraved
plates was garnered by ****sport Tennessee's own Rhea Starnes.
Starnes had completed his round two flight on Saturday...just
after his landing decided to advance the throttle a bit on the
KAOS, turn around and taxi back to himself....when a gust of wind
got under the model and it was airborne again quicker than one
could recite..."Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers".
Starnes, astonished that his airplane was airborne
again....attempted to regain his togetherness and fly it...but
just before that confident feeling returned, the airplane flew
into a nearby tree. Out of its' own garage came the RCRC
"crash-site" conveyance vehicle (Motorized Golf Cart) and zoomed
to the scene......standing on the siderails of the aforementioned
vehicle, his KAOS was retrieved from the tree with
NARY.....A.....SCRATCH !! This event was the nearest to
"hard-luck" experienced the whole week-end. I have the neatest
photo of Mr. Rhea using his hand to describe what
happened....it'll appear both on the website and in a coming
edition of the SPA Newsletter soon.
Tony Coberly- Pres. RCRC, Mary Long-PR Director RCRC....all
members who assisted, always dependable Chuck Facemire (for whom
the clubhouse is named)...registered as a contestant and never
flew a flight just to be a part of the contest and lend his
financial as well as physical assistance to the meets' success.
Mr. and Mrs. Jim McNeill, AMA VP visited and shot many photos
which will appear in a few days on the AMA website for District 5
and a future edition of Model Aviation.
Scott Sappington, our VP, who voiced the opening invocation both
days...summed up the feelings of the gathering when he
said...."Chief, we thank you for answering our requests for ideal
conditions, they were super". Gigantic Amens followed.
Thanks all....that made for a super contest.
Tony Coberly and Warren Tomme of RCRC who enjoyed along with a few
of us that remained in the deluxe clubhouse, the "Pickin' and
Singin'" duo of Nix and Watson....said," why don't you incorporate
a sort of party-like gathering like this in conjunction with next
years contest?"

9th Annual
Cullman Alabama SPA Championships
Cullman, Alabama...This wee kend’s “season-opener”
SPA contest hosted by the Cullman Aeromodellers
in Cullman was SUPER! As always, C A offered up not only the menu
of fine accommodations but serious “side-dressing” as well.
ALL comments regarding the consolidation of age-groups in the
SPORTSMAN class and the reversal to the original groupings in the
Senior Class were Positive. As a result of the new groupings there
were “contests” in every class. Each race for the hardware
embellished with laughter, good-hearted
competitiveness and a few....”I’ll do better next times.” The CD
was overheard saying at the awards ceremony, “this has certainly
been a help to the execution of a contest.....as a result of the
changes, we’re awarding through 5th place in EACH class”.
CD Steve said he was aware of about 5 fliers who wanted to be
participating but were have to be on CALL, or wor**** or had
commitments they couldn’t shake away from. These folks were sorely
missed and its’ hoped we can “double-up” on the fellowship at
Huntsville’s SPA contest next month.
Most everything was smooth sailing for fliers preparing for the
season-opener....but, as is the case with any endeavor worth its’
salt.....there were a few negatives......IE...1/2 half of the
HOOTNANNY entertainment duo Friday night had to go and park his
Compensator in a tall-tall oak squeezing in some last-minute
practice........and, rather than entertaining the gang at the
hootnanny, spent hours Friday night, preparing his
“back-up”.....the New Orleanian with the “age-spots” on it. I’ll
not name the individual since he vows....”its’ demeaning after
having won the Memorial Trophy” at the Masters contest last year.
Ken Nix crooned the night away at the Collins Kick-Off hootnanny
Friday night, but did admit to his audience, “I miss my scheduled
opening act”!
One of the highlights of the Cullman contest was the presentation
of a special “thank you, Steve” engraved plaque. President Ken
Hardin and Hobby Shop owner Sid Austin said the C A simply wanted
Steve Byrum to have a permanent reminder of how grateful the club
is for his devotion to the club and its’ endeavors, especially the
contests he directs. This presentation drew a loud ovation as
Byrum humbly accepted. Pyramid Hobbies presented a High Point
trophy to the flier in each class with the highest “rawscore”
flight.
Jim Fuller of Cullman was the lucky winner of the 6 channel radio
given in the raffle. It was one of the late model “goodies” from
JR (as I recall).
Scott Sappington and myself hope we got some dandy photos to share
both on the website and in the coming newsletter.
I didn’t mention the weather...because it was just
delightful....pretty strong winds made for some good challenges on
Saturday...and just a 20 minute or so rain delay on Sunday
morning.
Thanks much, Cullman Aeromodellers, you’ve opened the curtain on
what will probably be the most enjoyable season in SPA history.
(At our age, EACH is the most enjoyable....agree?)
