CULLMAN 2005
(Cherry on top of the SEASON)
CULLMAN, AL......The 10th Annual Cullman SPA Championships
this weekend.......... Oct. 8 & 9, 2005 was indeed the
"Cherry" on top of this tremendous contest season.
After having complained about hot temps for the past 4
months, no one was bad-mouthing the weatherman this season
here. Saturday found all 23 Pilots matching their flying
skills against a fairly stout Northwesterly wind clad in
layers of shirts, jackets and even some ear-muffs by some.
Some props were broken but not even as much as a single
"crash" mishap in the full 6 rounds of competition.
CD Steve's experiment was a resounding success. The
experiment was the flying of an additional OPEN class, both
SPORTSMAN and EXPERT for those pilots who had articulated a
desire to fly their tuned pipes, retracts and later year
models with their supercharged engines to the tune of the
SPA patterns.
The OPEN class attracted a pair of talented pilots from
Ohio, John and Eric Nessler who delighted all with their 60
sized engines equipped with tuned pipes and retracts in a
pair of handsome TIPORARE models. Beautiful models and these
guys from the Buckeye State could drive them skillfully.
Some of our regional SPA fliers joined in the fun of the
open class. Jon Lowe flew his good looking Phoenix Nine and
Phil Spelt flew a 40 Powered model that resembled a
shoestring type racer. Loads of good fun.
Competition was FIERCE in some classes with just 5 points
separating 1st and 2nd in OPEN Expert. Just 2 little points
separated 1st and 2nd in SPA SPORTSMAN and only 2 points
between 1st and 2nd in SPA NOVICE.
Loads of fellowshipping occured at the field...even more at
the TOP HAT fish restaurant on Saturday night. Duane and
Penny Wilson celebrated their wedding anniversary, I am
told, at the Cullman contest. What a Mate Duane landed.
Jim Huddleston, hard working Cullman Aeromodeller was the
lucky winner of the FUTABA radio raffle.
Cullman, your decision to postpone the "scrubbed" April
contest to this weekend was very timely and all comments the
PIO has received have been very positive.

Good Crowd - Great Contest !!
August 28,
2005.....KNOXVILLE, TN......Dennis Hunt, CD remarked at the
outset of the awards ceremony early this afternoon...."my
thanks to all of you for attending and making the KCRC SPA
Champs the largest in number of participants of any on the
circuit this season". He continued "its' such a pleasure to
have you here".
Skip Getelman vowed his gratitude for the help from others
due to a problem with his airplane. Cass Underwood lost
power in some fairly strong winds in round one and banged
the asphalt runway abruptly, resulting in a break or two and
numerous abrasions to his Phantom-1. A number of modelers
with epoxy, CA, etc. joined him in a "field-repair" and he
was back in the air for round two on. He said, "its' folks
like this that make this sport/hobby a genuine delight"!
27 precision pilots executed 6 complete rounds of
pattern.....fellowshipped and consumed Steak, Roasted Corn,
Baked Beans, etc at the Saturday night session on the scenic
flying sight. Saturday night revelers were entertained by
guitar and song favorites by Judging Guru Keith Watson.
Keith's singing shadowed the anticipated appearance of the
planet MARS. No one even thought about looking for a "closeup"
of Mars...they were having so much fun partying at the
field.
Jim Ivey's engine came uncranked a looooong way from the
runway...he displayed his expertise when he, with no power,
guided his gliding Daddy Rabbit to a 10 point downwind
landing....through a giant gum treetop. There's a photo to
prove his experience.
Dennis and KCRC....you did a GREAT job...what a marvelous
weekend.
Raffle winners were:
Steve Byrum.....................Sure Cycle
Mike Miller........................Accu Cycle
Jerry Black.......................Acco Peak Charger
Phil Cope.........................BN 2000 Battery Checker
Mark Sobelewski.............Freq Checker
Congratulations to the above winners. Wish all you folks
reading this who weren't in K'ville this week-end could have
been there |

Lincoln
Sky Knight's Legacy Pattern contest
by Allan Worrest SPA 201
The Lincoln Sky Knight's
Legacy Pattern contest is one of four one-day, SPA-like
contests held in Nebraska. We have been doing this for the
past several years. These contests use the current SPA
schedule but with no age classes. Nor are there any
restrictions on the aircraft. At our contest on July 31,
there were two Great Plains Venuses, several AMA pattern
planes, and a lot in between. The first round started out
overcast, windy, and the temperature was tolerable. The
second round was clear, windy, and hot. The last round ended
clear, fairly calm, and very hot. As usual for our SPA-like
contests, John Willman and Nick Reiss fought it out for
first place in Expert. With Nick calling for him, John
really nailed the last round and won. On the lower end of
Expert, I placed ahead of Mike Yearley for once. Mike was
flying with a new YS110 that kept flaming out. There were no
crashes. Mark Bergt, flying Sportsman, tore out his landing
gear on the second round and didn't fly the third. CD John
Willman with the help of Roger Hinrichs prepared lunch. For
the contestants it was free. John handed out some raffle
prizes. He also made distinctive plaques for the top three
places in Novice, Sportsman, and Expert classes." It was a
well done contest. Allan Worrest SPA 201 Lincoln, NE

DEDICATED
DELIGHTFUL DOZEN
July 23-24 Hotlanta Georgia
PAULDING CO. GA: 12 of the most
dedicated PRECISION AEROBATIC PILOTS in the sport/hobby of pattern
competition and fellowship remained almost too busy enjoying the
PCMA hospitality and the fun of pattern competition flying to even
be concerned with the HOT temps that accompanied this delightful
weekend at the Paulding County Model Club field.
The covered area adjacent to the combination asphalt and grassed
site was kept cool by huge ceiling fans that were supplemented with
two additional giant "box-type" fans at each side of the facility.
The club obtained two new EZ UP tents for the judges which provided
welcomed shade.
With the small number of participants....CD John Baxter announced
his decision to fly the contest "TOC Style" with a single flight
line and constant activity. As one flyer would approach landing,
another would fire up his engine...so practically no "downtime" was
experienced. Baxter flew four rounds on Saturday and two on
Sunday...just as was announced at the outset.
Saturday night 27 attended the MEXICAN FIESTA at a famed restaurant
near Acworth where the excellent food, adult beverages, and story
telling lingered to well beyond a mature adults' bedtime. But, who
can knock off for "beddy-bye" when you're having such a grand time
"swapping tales" and fraternizing? We even learned what Mrs. Ivey
obtained for tilling her garden soil while hubby Jim was away at the
AMA Nats! Its' amazing isn't it how much corn is shucked over a 2nd
Margarita!
Richard Little headed a team of cooks and waitresses at the field
pavilion that really served up scrumptous grub. Burgers with
Homegrown tomato slices and iceberg lettuce....hotdogs with Jim
Rogers selected "all beef" coneys. Mrs. Matt Hampton provided
packaged cookies, peanuts and goodies. This group worked like an
army of Shoney's trained executives.
Following round 4 Saturday afternoon, Jim Rogers raffled off an OS
91 engine and two 100 doller gift Certificates from Doug's Hobbies.
The lucky winner of the new engine was Frank Stewart (original Sec/Tres).
One of the certificates went to Rick Long of PCMA and lucky Mama
Jane Underwood (Mrs. Bruce) won the other.
As is the case during many of our SPA contest week-ends....the time
just flies when the enjoyment is at MAX.....this was indeed one of
the shortest week-ends of the summer......thanks to the excellent
efforts by CD Baxter and his wonderful PCMA compatriots. SPA Chapter
one......"it was one of the BEST in your fabled series of annual
contests". |

Cave Springs,
Georgia....June 9, 2005
CAMARADERIE AT
CAVE SPRING, GA
Cave Spring, GA.......July 9, 2005
here in historical Cave Spring, GA was just “picture-perfect”
weather for flying SPA precision aerobatics on the Coosa Valley
Flyers RC Field on the campus of the Georgia School for the Deaf.
Fifteen pilots from as far away as 6 to 7 hours enjoyed 5 rounds
of competition and loads of good fellowship and great eatin’ with
the members of CVRCF. The weather, was, believe it or not, a bit
milder than typical July due to the light breezes evidently bought
on by the pending Hurricane Dennis generating its’ devastation out
in the Gulf and aiming at Florida and Alabama Beaches. Oh yes,
there was perspiration, just not quite as much as would be normal
for a July day in Georgia. These were indeed welcome conditions
and participants took full advantage of them. Very few minutes
elapsed without the sound of a model engine humming.
CVRCF President Troy Emmett and crew did their traditional fine
job of hosting the event....always accommodating every want and
food that would rival a picnic table catered by Colonel Sanders.
The members served up grilled burgers and dogs alongside baked
beans (secret recipe).....chocolate brownies and homemade cakes.
The members kept judges well supplied with Ice water and chilled
soda pops as desired.
Media coverage of the event was provided by Rome Cablevision whose
reporter interviewed SPA officers and shot a great amount of
footage to be aired on the Rome facility during the coming week.
RC Universe, the Internet Model web folks assigned its’ Georgia
reporter who shot many photos, many of which were posted before
the days end (July 9, 2005) on its’ R C UNIVERSE Domain. (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3151667/tm.htm) R C Universe donated tee shirts and caps that insured ALL
participants received some award memento for the event, not just
the trophy winners.
There were no casualties (crashes)...all flights were successful.
Had we had a “TUFF LUCK” award, it would have gone to Kingsport,
TN with Mr. Rhea Starnes...because (and it really wasn’t tuff
luck)..he was raising the antenna on his transmitter and the
little molded piece of plastic inside the transmitter case
broke...disabling the device. Starnes was overwhelmed by the
number of neighborly flyers offering assistance immediately. He
was able to continue his flights when flying buddy, Bill Kite
reprogrammed his transmitter to activate Starnes’ receiver. At the
awards ceremony, Starnes was quoted as saying “these are some of
the finest folks I’ve ever associated with”.
It was a pleasure flying with one of the newest SPA members, Mr.
Duane Wilson from Ashville, N.C. who attended his initial SPA
contest, flew his lovely Taurus powered by an OS 60 FX 2 Stroke
engine. (This model is the one pictured in the July/Aug SPA
Newsletter).
Coosa Valley RC Flyers are grateful to all fliers who participated
and are already making plans for their 2006 event.
ED NOTE: I happened to be the first to arrive at the field on
Saturday morning....I was greeted at the 2nd field entry gate by 3
Deer Fawns and an Adult Doe that had apparently been dispatched to
greet me...because I was within 15 feet of them before they just
sauntered into the nearby thicket. Another fawn checked me out
from a distance of about 15 feet as I unloaded my car.
Thanks Coosa Valley Flyers for a great contest. See you all in
HOTLANTA. |

HUNTSVILLE,
AL....May 14-15, 2005
HUNTSVILLE
HAPPINESS !!
Huntsville, AL.....May 14-15, 2005:
23 SPA Pilots spent the week-end Flyin', Funnin' and Fellowshippin'
at the Capt. Trey Wilborn Field in Huntsville, AL this weekend.
The weatherman smiled on us for a little over 1/2 of the day on
Saturday, then, the predicted thunderstorms curtailed flying for
about 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Late Saturday afternoon following two
full rounds of SPA contesting....the NSRCA conducted flying
exhibitions by Lamar Blair, NSRCA President, and Jim Ivey, member
of NSRCA and prominent SPA pilot. After actual demos, the group
moved to the modern Chuck Facemire Memorial Clubhouse for
"Classroom type" study of both AMA and SPA maneuvers. Blair
explained that flyers planning on participating in the AMA Nats
must be certified since most will be Contestant Judges there.
Sunday brought a BEAUTIFUL day.....morning clouds allowed an early
start which with the limited use of SUNSPOTS for the early part of
the day allowed two good rounds in all classes and three for
Novices. This brought the total to four rounds for all classes
except NOVICES who flew 5 rounds. Incidentally, there were 7
NOVICES, 4 of which, flew in their FIRST SPA contest.
It was an almost unbelievable success story of "Hard LUCK" to
WINNING for Novice Champ Julian Jaramillo of Marietta, GA.....1st
time competitor and member of the "on the Ball" PCMA flyers from
the Peach State. Julian, crashed his beautiful ARF on Saturday
early for which he received the HARD LUCK trophy....then, thanks
to the benevolence and courtesy of fellow PCMA clubbers (more reps
from PCMA participated in the Huntsville contest than any other
club on the circuit)...he was loaned an airplane by, Bob Bixby, (I
think it was Bob's airplane)...and managed to WIN the hotly
contested Novice Class. What a story......there'll be lots of
stories surrounding this victory relived on the circuit. When
Julian was presented the HARD LUCK award early in the Ceremony, he
was humbly grateful......but, It isn't very often you see the
sincere gratitude expressed like Julian did when he was announced
the winner of the class. You could detect small tears of
gratitude as he almost yelled out in broken English......."thank
you, thank you Sir....I wish thank-you to Mr. Bob Bixby and
wife". Its' times such as this......that you folks in PCMA who
coached and worked with Julian......can swell with PRIDE....for
your' efforts in recruiting new participants in our
Sport/hobby.......Ya'll done GOOD !
Thanks so very much to all who
attended. I just ran by and visited with Mr. and Mrs. Ken Nix
(Ken & Nancy) to again compliment them on their conduction of the
event and they too echo our sentiments. Special thanks to three
modelers who shared in judging chores allowing many of our pilots
more freedom to fellowship. They were Ray Craig of Anniston, AL,
Bill Collins of Guntersville, AL and Bill Harden of Decatur, AL.
Oh, in addition to the HARD LUCK trophy, another special award was
the PRETTIEST BIRD award.....won by Berry Roper of the PCMA club.
His handsome Daddy-Rabbit with the air-force markings was voted
the prettiest.
All participants in Huntsville were provided with printed contest
Flyers promoting the Cave Springs, GA SPA contest July 9 & 10,
2005.

CULLMAN,
AL....April 23, 2005
It was one of the days that BLUSTERY was the
foremost utterance among conversations carried on by attendees at
the "season-opening" SPA contest here.
CD Steve Byrum called a 3rd meeting of intended participants before
a decision, on popular vote, was reached to cancel the scheduled
contest and apply for a "make-up" sanction date for October
following the Masters in mid September. The action was spurred by
twisting and turning winds of up to 37+ miles per hour associated
with a rapidly moving cold-front that followed a series of
thunderstorms that pelted all of the state of Alabama on the heels
of 6 consecutive days of almost "picture-perfect" Spring weather.
Byrum and the Cullman Aeromodelers expressed over and over their
gratitude to the excellant number of intended participants who
attended. All this reporter conversed with following the contest
officials decision....were universal in agreement with the contest
officials that this was indeed a wise decision in view of the most
adverse flying conditions.
