Hotlanta 2006 Masters
FROSTING on 2006 SPA
Contest Season
As the caption implies.....both
mornings of the 2006 MASTERS contest at PCMA (Paulding
County Model Aviation) were literally “frosted”. The usual term for
HOTLANTA wasn’t even used the weekend of October 14 & 15 as a
result. It was typical early Autumn, cold in the mornings but
warming up nicely as the day progressed. A brisk wind primarily from
the NE served to lower the chill factor to the point that layers of
clothing were welcomed as was the club-provided hot coffee and
doughnuts.
Flying was typical for late season, much more accurate maneuver
execution, evidently with participation in prior contests and extra
practice for this one. Many judges exclaimed, "the flying was just
better and consequentially more difficult to find errors for
downgrades".
ALL 27 contestants received a memento plaque of their participation
in the 2006 MASTERS contest at PCMA. Jim Rogers is going to have the
pleasure of redeeming his $300.00 gift certificate from Pyramid
Hobbies as the raffle winner. A gift like that is equivalent to
winning a key to Santa's workshop.
A couple of mishaps occurred when Bob Bixby's aluminum wing tube
succumbed to the G's applied to it in the Horizontal Eight. Phil
Spelt's Panzer aileron servo decided to go on strike during his
sequence. The guys smiled, recovered the components and realized,
"this happens to all of us that enjoy this sport/hobby.
Rich Ernst from the Sunshine State flew that beautiful DECEPTION
model that was the feature in a recent SPA newsletter.
The HIGHLIGHT of the annual MASTERS was the FLY-OFF in each class as
well as the same for the Senior Expert Pilot to determine who
possesses the prized MEMORIAL TROPHY for the coming year. It's
amazing, the solitude that exists as spectators and judges together
eye each skillful input to the planes piloted by these accomplished
qualifiers. Again, this year, each qualifier seemed to perform a
more precise pattern during the FLY-OFF than during the regular
competition rounds. Flashbacks of previous TOC's came to mind as one
enjoyed the performance of these pilots. Even the "old-timers"
confessed to nerves inciting "shaky-knees".
PCMA, ya' did us WELL with your' host and hostess duties. Sincerest
"thanks" for your' efforts, all, from the Cooks, waitresses,
scorekeepers, runners, CD and assistants. This MASTERS certainly
earned another notch in the PCMA "handle" on contest sponsorship!

Ashville North Carolina September 16, 2006The
first “Land of the Sky” SPA pattern meet is now part of SPA history,
2006. I have said repeatedly, and I’ll say again just how much I
personally appreciated the support of everyone who had faith in our
little effort, and came out for the "Meet and Greet" at my house,
and later the Asheville contest. Several of those staying over
Saturday night went out later and had dinner at a not-so-typical
Japanese steakhouse.
The house Meet & Greet was everything I had hoped it would be. I
intended it to be a change of pace from the normal Friday evening of
arriving at the motel and finding a few folks to have dinner
with--as far as I know everybody with a hotel room came over for an
informal get together and cook-out. After dinner, Jamie Strong
brought a DVD of---himself---a kind-of "this is Your R/C Life--Jamie
Strong", where we were able to follow his early RC career. It was
great identifying the old, (new at the time), pattern planes, and we
realized that Jamie did not always look like he does now:)
There were more newcomers to SPA as both Dan, (Deadstick), Hines of
Carolina Custom Aircraft, and Jeff Petroski of Home and Hobby
Solutions, (who donated raffle prizes), came up for the get-together
and the competition—it was great for SPA members to be able to meet
and discuss vintage kits and kit ideas with these manufacturers face
to face prior to the contest. By Saturday most everybody knew
everybody already. The only complaint I have is folks didn't eat
enough, (or we had too much):)
Every SPA meet is different, and this one was no different--this was
the first one I've been to with FOG, (and as many of the pictures
show, not just a little fog). This time of year, the nights really
start to cool off--Thursday night the low was 57*, and Friday night,
the thermometer dipped down to 52* You know what happens when you
take basically the same air that's in Charlotte of Atlanta, and cool
it down to 52*??---you get FOOGG, especially in the river valleys
where our field just happens to be. (Friday the fog "burned off" at
10AM, and because it was even cooler, Saturday----the contest date,
it wasn't gone 'till about 11AM---very frustrating for everyone. A
couple brave souls tested out the ceiling when things finally
started to clear. I remember in particular Scott Anderson's plane
disappearing into the mist for a couple seconds, (seemed longer), at
the top of a large loop---a little bit like a "stealth" SPA
aircraft, but instead of disappearing from the radar, it disappered
from sight. After the fog burned off, the skies were bright, winds
were usually light, manageable, and down the runway, and best of
all, the temps were in the upper 70s--a great, although short day of
flying. Finally the word was given, and we were on our way to a
great contest.
The important thing for me was that everyone seemed to have a good
time in spite of either NO SUN or TOO MUCH SUN late in the
afternoon--it was all part of the challenge. There was so much SPA
support for the contest; I received so much needed help in critical
positions, (ie computer, flight board), from people like Joel
Hebert, and Mike Miller from KCRC. In fact Gary Lindner made the
point of saying he WANTED to be there just to help---and he did. We
had lots of Novice flyers, (nine), but not enough Expert pilots
which created a judging challenge, but as Mike Miller has already
said, everybody was helpful, chipped in with judging suggestions,
and did whatever was needed without complaint. There was also
invaluable help from several of the local ABA club members--many of
which had never even SEEN a pattern meet, much less an SPA
contest--( I am presently the LONE aerobatic flyer around here),
without all these people, it wouldn't have turned out the same.
There were several first-timers, either as competitors or
spectators. In addition to Jeff Petroski, and Dan (Deadstick) Hines,
Jim Hamilton made it to his first SPA event, and was not
disappointed with what he saw. He told me he was supposed to report
back to other potentially interested flyers in the New Jersey area
about whether SPA is really as much fun as we have been telling them
it is--he is going to give them a good report, and he'll be back.
Also brand new to the "SPA Experience" Doug Whitaker, (who took 2nd
place in Novice), and Steve Vergamini added to the large field of
Novice, (future Experts) Pilots.
Thanks again--I hope you enjoyed your time in Asheville, and maybe
we'll hold another meet in the Asheville area next year. We already
have an invitation to hold a two-day event at a different site, (I
haven't seen), next year.

08-20-06
CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE
The Chattanooga Challenge was, in the
words of honored modelmaker, designer, pilot, instructor,
competitor and just plain good Joe, Dennis Hunt, "the best
attended SPA contest of this season so far". What a
tremendous "first sponsored event" this week-end.
The Dave Johnsons' were literally surrounded with family
members and Chattanooga RC Clubbers who tended to any and
all needs of the 27 contestants and their family members and
mechanics who participated in the CHALLENGE.
CRCC President Owen Maupin attended the Saturday night SPA
bash at the City Cafe (inside the Best Western Motel where
most contestants stayed) and on numerous occasions heaped
praise on CD Dave for spurring this hugely successful event
in Choo Choo City.
Weather was typical August.....hot as expected....but
beautiful flying conditions with a fairly strong breeze off
a flyers back most of the weekend. An isolated thunderstorm
blew in after dark Saturday night and was gone before
midnight. Dave flew 4 rounds on Saturday and 2 on Sunday
just like clockwork. The runway must have been 90 feet wide
and probably 800 feet long newly sealed asphalt with a
freshly cut grass apron on the far side almost as wide as
the asphalted area.
It was so good to get to fly with "years-ago" pattern types
like Dave Burton from Charlotte, N.C. and John Nessler Jr.
(Eric and Johns' Dad from Ohio) who experienced fellowship
and friendly competition just like the "golden years" of
pattern. These two now know (and acknowledge) what they've
been missing. Phillip Evans plunged into his first-ever
competition. Mike Miller didn't even touch a microphone
(KCRC announcer), but flew as a contestant in Chattanooga.
"Loved it". Bob Bixby's Serviceman Son assisted
Dad.....Eddie Hartley (Ed's Son) came on Sunday and helped
Dad...like the "good ole Days".
KCRC's President, Phil Spelt and our Webmaster Ed Hartley
allowed their Daddy Rabbits to kiss in mid air.....that "yankee-dime"
demolished the left wingtip of each....and these fine pilots
both flew their DR's to a safe landing on the strip. They'll
be repaired and back in action by Ashville, methinks.
This is just a brief "update" on the CHOO CHOO CHALLENGE
(even the awards depicted the world famous Chattanooga Choo
Choo).
Our good Sec/Tres said Mike Miller gave him his application
for SPA membership and 4 more were forthcoming from within
the Chattanooga Club. Welcome additions, indeed.
Dave, Stephanie....all you folks in Chattanooga.....you
overlooked nothing in providing a simply delightful
weekend...."thank-you, thank-you"...for a wonderful
week-end. It won't be long before John Baxter assembles a
"slide-show" for all to view....we have loads of still shots
to share, results, etc. that will be forthcoming within 24
to 48 hours...best wishes to all.

9TH (COOL)LANTA
SENIOR PATTERN CHAMPS
Paulding Co. GA........June
18, 2006
What has traditionally been one of the most hospitality
laden contests on the SPA Precision Aerobatic Circuit has
notably been garnished with typical seasonal hot and humid
temperatures. NOT SO this year.
What a timely decision by CD John Baxter and the PCMA
Chapter 1 organizers, to reschedule this years contest to a
cooler date. At no time did the temp exceed the mid-80's and
the humidity remained very bearable. Numerous comments were
overheard regarding the performance of the engines this
weekend, because the motors did indeed perform at peak as a
result of the lower humidity. Many of us returned home with
almost all the Gatorade we had carried assuming we'd have
need for its' consumption. It simply wasn't needed. The
climate was downright pleasant!
Of the twenty entries, an impressive slate of eight Novice
fliers contested a full six rounds of competition. PCMA and
Top Notch Trophies provided souvenir plaques for ALL eight
of the Novice entries. What a nice gesture.
A "golden era" pattern enthusiast, Mr. Michael Blake of San
Antonio, TX flew into Atlanta and guested as an
"observer"....asking questions of participants, buying a
model or two and renewing his interest in our sport/hobby.
TNT "mugged" Mr. Blake with an SPA souvenir mug much like
the Nesslers of Ohio had received earlier in the season. AMA
Associate VP Freddie McClellan shot photos and covered the
event for AMA's District 5.
37 folks attended the Saturday night "fiesta" at El Nopal
Mexican restaurant which featured an enormous amount of
tasty mexican dishes at an unbelievably low price. John
Baxter, CD, Duane Wilson, Model Aviation author of the SPA
story, Dave Johnson, Chattanooga CD, Mickey Walker, our
Founder-Emeritus and myself all grabbed an opportunity to
thank those who attended, hear reports on the coming
Chattanooga contest, etc. I suppose the highlight of the
evening was the presentation of a huge "page-size" walnut
plaque that TNT provided that had the actual front cover of
the May Model Aviation mag under plastic with engraved "MR.
MAY 2006" to our good Veep, Scott Sappington who was
literally "red-faced" when he accepted it, because most all,
including Mrs. May, Toni...knew what was coming. At the
insistence of the crowd yelling "speech, speech"...Mr. May
shared a testimony with us that, to be basically frank,
visually stirred the emotions of our Founder, myself and
many others of our "SPA Family".
Did mishaps occur? Well, if you consider a "mid-air"
collision one, yes there was. Rhea Starnes, flying John
Baxters' Daddy-Rabbit and Jim Rogers lovely Phantom-1
elected to collide during Round 5 on Sunday morning. The
prop on the DR chewed up the entire aft section of Rogers'
Phantom totaling it. Starnes skillfully comandeered the DR
back to the runway with several pieces of the P-1 literally
impaled into its' fuse nose section. There were a couple of
crashes, both apparently caused by some sort of equipment
malfunction, but, what the heck, hasn't this happened to all
of us?
After the delightful awards ceremony and the fond
"farewells"....you just seem to get the same feeling that
immediately follows a PCMA SPA contest, "I think that's the
BEST contest they've ever put on!" Truthfully, its' just
another in the series of good events at PCMA. Just think, we
have the opportunity of returning to PCMA for the 2006
MASTERS in October. Doesn't that cause your frown to become
a GIANT SMILEY ??
PCMA, a "bushel-an-a-peck" of thank-yous for a wonderful
week-end. It was COOL.

| Knoxville Tennessee May 20-21 2006
KNOXVILLE, TN..........May 21, 2006 Several
of us "ole-timers" have been contesting in Knoxville since
the invention of DIRT, I suppose. One often wonders "How
does a model club like KCRC keep on doing such a spectacular
job of holding and conducting such a GREAT contest?".
Well, I for one, can attest to the fact that, like Marty
Kings' article in the current SPA newsletter, "it takes WORK
and cooperation "! An excellent Contest Director that
surrounds himself with capable people. Scorekeepers,
announcer, runners, some qualified club judges, Jacks of all
trades and master of all of them. Dennis Hunt is that kind
of CD, his expertise was evident all this weekend, with the
only stalled action because of a couple of strong
thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon...but even with the two
storms, 23 excellent pilots flew at the "most scenic flying
site in the South". Senior Expert flew 5 full rounds, all
other classes 6 full rounds. Other than the thundershowers,
the weather was very nice...a moderate current blowing in
challenged pilots slightly.
It was heartbreaking to view Vic Koening go in on the runway
with his lovely Dirty-Birdy # 1. He went to the vehicle and
brought out another DB....just as handsome as number one.
Vic told your' PIO...."I read of the helpfulness among the
SPA fraternity.....do I ever realize it now". He continued,"
club members and other flyers retrieved all my pieces and
were offering consolation all over the field." This is
indeed a GREAT group!
Duane Wilson was fortunate that the receiver in his good-lookin'
King ALTAIR went out just as he was preparing to take-off
after a rain delay. It was ironic...he had just taken off
when announcer Mike Miller said, "you pilots may land right
away". The receiver failed prior to resuming that flight.
Divinity? Hmmmmmmmm
Duane received a LARGE "thank-you" award from SPA (presented
him by Founder Mickey Walker)..for the interest he has
generated in SPA via his article in the May issue of Model
Aviation. Dennis Hunt, in announcing the award said,"
Duane's article has sparked interest in all parts of our
country and added, its' had a resounding effect on Zimpro
(Dennis's Model Company)....I'm sending Daddy Rabbits in all
directions". Steve Byrum said he had processed many new
applications for SPA membership and was pleased to shed info
on SPA from any modelers asking.
Two "first-timers" participated in competition, Mark
Sobolewski flew his KAOS 40 and Karl Gerth entered flying
his Javelin. Congratulations to these modelers and
interviewing each, they had a ball!
Photos, slideshows, results and other reports are
"in-the-mill". Stay tuned here.
Dennis, KCRC, you're a tradition...........thanks heaps for
a SUPER contest !!
KNOXVILLE, TN -- KCRC put on
another successful contest this past weekend. My recognition
and thanks go to CDs Dennis Hunt and Ed Hartley, who made
all the arrangements and ran the contest. Also most
deserving of special thanks are:
Mike Miller -- ran the flight order board and PA with great
skill. Joel Hebert -- did the computer scoring with is usual
skill and accuracy -- rounds were posted in a most timely
manner, as always. Gary Lindner (Sat) and Skip Dishner (Sun)
-- running score sheets and doing other necessary but not
always obvious things to keep the event running smoothly.
Hal Travis -- ably ran registration, and wouldn't let me
fill in the "Place" column by my name with a "1st" Harry
Hogan -- handled lunch on Saturday, going to Simms Market to
pickup and pay for our lunches -- everyone got what they
wanted. Jerel Zarestly and Paul Funk -- helped with judging
in Sportsman and Expert classes.
Finally, my sincere thanks to all the SPA pilots and
families who made the trip to Knoxville and are THE REASON
for the contest in the first place.
I even won one of Cass's
BEAUTIFUL Tennessee-shaped trophies
-- first one in YEARS...
Following Bruce's lead, I guess I'm the "kcrc pio"...(for
now)
-->A good flight is the second-best thing known to man --
a good landing is the first!!

CULLMAN COURTESY
CULLMAN, AL - April 23,
2006......Cullman's Courtesy was indeed CONTAGIOUS
this week-end. Perhaps it was the delightful
weather, maybe the good flying with very few minor
mishaps (chipped props, scraped tips, etc), or the
typical SPA FELLOWSHIP. Attendees were definitely
tipsy on "good-time" association.
Steve Byrum and the CULLMAN AEROMODELLERS continued
their longtime tradition of hosting a delightful SPA
Precision Aerobatic contest. Matter of fact this was
their 10th Annual SPA Championships. The first thing
to greet contestants and spectators was a brand new
BURDESHAW FIELD sign at the entrance. That was just
the beginning of a fun-filled format of contesting.
24 contestants entered the competition and they
couldn't have been spaced any more competitively...6
in NOVICE, 7 in SPORTSMAN, 6 in EXPERT and 5 in
SENIOR EXPERT. Ideal numbers.
At the Pilots' briefing on Saturday, Steve
announced, "this is the last contest off the roller
coaster"....referring to the hilled and gullied
asphalt runway...he continued "we're going to tear
up the asphalt, level and plant grass...we have
obtained water and electricity already. The
improvements are in the works!".
One of the highlights of the weekend was the line of
autograph-seekers obtaining the autograph of Scott
Sappington, our esteemed Vice-President whose
full-length photo (shot by Duane Wilson) appeared on
the cover of the May issue of MODEL AVIATION. Scott
was so humble and expressed over and over his
gratutude to Duane Wilson, author of the story, for
the good story and the worldwide exposure for the
SENIOR PATTERN ASSOCIATION. Scott refused to enter
his pictured DADDY RABBIT this week-end but opted to
fly his backup KAOS. Hmmmmm
6 full rounds of pattern were flown, 4 on Saturday
and 2 on Sunday. As noted, only little "prop-chips"
etc were the serious damages. Temps moderated to the
point that most competitors were clad in shorts and
colorful SPA shirts.
At the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon, special SPA
mugs were given to John and Eric Nessler who made
the long drive to Alabama from Dublin, OH to exhibit
their skills with their beautiful new A6 Intruders
assembled during the past winter. The mugs were
provided by Cass Underwood of Top Notch Trophies in
addition to a $100 cash presentation to the SPA
Treasury from the sale of SPA shirts.
The original LOGO KAOS model went North to Sale
Creek, Tennessee with Robert Johnson who entered his
first- ever SPA contest this weekend in Cullman. He
and his brother John outpointed their dad, David
slightly as all three flew in the NOVICE class.
Robert and Curtis Comer of Huntsville, AL were two
"first-timers" in SPA competition this
weekend....congratulations to both. Thanks much to
Mickey Walker, Founder Emeritus of SPA, SPA # 1, for
the donation of the proceeds to the SPA treasury.
To CD Steve and CULLMAN AEROMODELLERS, it was a
geniune treat participating in your' 10th Annual SPA
contest this weekend. You folks are prime examples
of "how a great contest is hosted!".
Wish every one of you could have been there.

PRATTVILLE - PRISTINE
Quoting our notable
SPA Vice President....or, actually stealing from
Sappington's verbage- CACHE, that flying field at
Fountain City (Prattville, Alabama)...is just
that.... pristine....which, according to Websters
New World Dictionary....."uncorrupted, unspoiled".
Another definition in RC model-flyers terms would
have to be "the hot set-up" (an old Roho term).
Just imagine 900 feet by 200 feet, smoothern' a
newborns posterior !!
Friday afternoon and all day Saturday was
blustery....but, what the hey? Isn't this what we
expect in the windy month of MARCH each year? It was
a might coolish....but, what the hey? That's where
the jackets and ear muffs came in so handy. These
are the kinds of conditions that tend to make model
engines perform at peak. They just hummed like they
were all consuming HIGH nitro...even the twin "gassie"
!
Go back and read the above sentence. Chris Tomberlin
won 5 of the 6 rounds in Novice competition driving
a single cylinder DA 50 on Saturday and a twin
cylinder DA 100 on Sunday. This was entirely
reminiscent of standing at the edge of William
Bennett Field in Las Vegas, NV and watching birds of
this type performing in the Tournament of Champions.
Delightful !! Plainly, in the Novice class of SPA,
"anything goes"....and it was a delight to have
Chris of GOLDEN EAGLE AIRCRAFT not only flying in
the Prattville contest, but one of the two newest
members of SPA. Golden Aircraft is in Cecil,
Alabama.
In the above paragraph, I mentioned TWO new SPA
members, welcome to Mr. Charles Duke of Columbus, GA
to the Association. Charles and SPA # 276 Chuck
Goodrum of Columbus, GA came just to spectate as
their models are just a bit short of completion.
13 Stalwart SPA pilots thoroughly enjoyed the
week-end of contest hospitality offered up by Jamie
Strong (CD) and the Fountain City Flyers. Despite
the strong winds reported by Jim Oliver earlier,
nary a crash occurred, and only 2 or 3 landings were
slightly downwind of the huge runway. The Seafood
Buffet at the FANTAIL on Saturday night was
delicious and attendees yearned for nothing else
produced by the sea. Yum-Yum !
Our webmaster will more than likely be posting
results within 48 hours...meanwhile let me tell you
that Joe Holton, discovered a program mix in his JR
9303 xmttr which he had loaned Keith Watson, that
was designed exclusively for a Compensator....and
almost completely diminished one aileron's
deflection at a certain throttle setting. Hmmmmmm
Joe's airplane is a Daddy-Rabbit !! It was a SUPER
week-end for Holton....as it was HE....who held the
winning raffle ticket for the A-6 ARF Intruder by
World Models which was the grand raffle prize. Joe's
gotta be doing something right to have had such a
splendid weekend as this one.
Jamie and his companions in the Fountain City Flyers
Club extended every courtesy to insure the success
of this, their very FIRST SPA contest in what is
hoped will become a series of many, many delightful
"season-openers". I can't wait to share the many
photos I shot with you... but gotta get ready for an
early Monday workday now. John Baxter, with his VERY
expensive SONY with zoom lenses and all the bells
and whistles....shot tons of photos and has promised
to assemble a "slide-show" of them and will share
with us just as soon as this is done.
FOUNTAIN CITY (Prattville), you got us opened for
2006 and we are so very grateful !!
