Cullman Aeromodellers - AUTHORS

Ernest Hemmingway, Samuel Clemmons, Daniel Webster and other like notorious authors wrote some good, informative and entertaining books we've all used in the past for research, pleasure, etc.

If there is a "How-To" publication on effective and efficient contest running in the future, it will no-doubt be authored by our H E (Highly efficient) SPA Sec/Treas. Steve Byrum....notable Contest Director for years now for the Cullman Aeromodellers Model Airplane Club in Cullman, Alabama.

Mail list readers will recall, I (PIO) went out on a limb and quoted the National Weather Service in Huntsville, AL, which on Friday Sept. 19th....said "no rain til Sunday afternoon then only 30% chance".  1/2 of their forecast was "right-on"....for Saturday Sept. 20 was just delightful and the 23 flyers in the MASTERS contest really enjoyed it.  As scheduled, four complete rounds by all classes were completed plus the Memorial Trophy Fly-Off was flown with ample time for all to shower and shove off to the Annual Masters Business meeting and banquet.  The un-forecast rain started about 9:30 AM Sunday morning and never quit....so Steve MC'd a delightful awards ceremony under the covered pavilion.  Congrats to all the winners and thanks so much for the interest and participation in the Points Championships for this season. At least two of the Points Championships were determined at the MASTERS.

The Memorial Trophy "Fly-Off".....as always, was the highlight of the activity with 5 judges amassed along the runway diligently seeking errors in the qualifiers flights (there weren't many).  We five judges agreed amongst us, neither of the 3 qualifiers flew such errorless flights in regular competition as they did this flight.  Only 11 raw points seperated 1st and 2nd place after the "high" and the "low" scores were discarded and the others tallied.  I wish every precision aerobatic RC pilot "wannabee" could have viewed this round.  The poise and execution demonstrated by these excellant pilots was admired and appreciated by the spectators that lined the area behind the judges.  These guys were shining examples of the kind of model-flying skills and expertise we all hope to achieve.  I'm proud I have all their autographs to show my Grandchildren when reliving that event!

Results are on the Webpage as will some of the early photos with more to be added just as soon as they are processed.

Thanks much Cullman.....as has become a tradition with you folks, ya'll are such GREAT hosts and hostesses.

T S " HANNAH " fails to disrupt MASTERS

Despite the torrential downpours and at times almost tornado force winds......Tropical Storm HANNAH that delayed the Georgia vs South Carolina game for the better part of an hour.....caused a big delay in the Braves game vs. the Florida Marlins....

She did NOT disrupt the annual MASTERS contest at the original home of the SPA.....Paulding County Model Aviations' field.

The terrible conditions were responsible for the contests' having been limited to just one round of official competition plus the Memorial Trophy annual "flyoff".  Fellowship and "under the tent" jawing was at its' peak this week-end.

Mickey Walker, as usual was the epitome of CD's with cooperation and manpower of Mrs. CD (Rebecca) and the PCMA membership lending any and all efforts needed to insure a great contest, loads of good eats, raffle and TOP NOTCH awards.

If you failed to attend, you were missed sorely..those who participated please join me in a well-deserved cheer for PCMA....

HIP,    HIP   HOORAY!

A sincere "thanks" to PCMA, its' sponsors, officers, members and ALL who contributed to  a "GREAT" week-end.

It certainly takes a lot more than a Tropical Storm to dampen PCMA's "resolve"!

MONTGOMERY - MARVELOUS

Montgomery, AL. 09-16-01...........Invocations and "prayers of consolation and Peace" were the highlights of this weekends' Masters contest here in the capitol of Alabama.

The Georgia delegation timely displayed a giant and a smaller American flag at the center of their sun-tents, the larger of the pair appropriately flown at half-mast in honor of the victims of last Tuesday's attack on America.  Not one but two prayers were voiced by the attendees as the farly brisk Northeast winds seemed to hold the flags in a position resembling a "salute"....a salute to proud Americans dismayed by the events of the week and extremely grateful for their blessings and opportunities to exercise a sport/hobby enjoyed perhaps, more by THIS group than many.

Mike & Pam Hare, Dave Carlton, Tom...the many RAMM clubmembers were perfect hosts & hostesses.

28 SPA fliers enjoyed the hospitality and the week-end...all wishing it was Friday afternoon again as the contest ended.

You're gonna be hearing much in the coming months about this Masters contest....Roy, Ed, Ken and others were seen shudderbuggin' (shooting photos) all week-end. Some will be digital and on the computer. Others,  regular types will be published in upcoming newsletters.

To the RAMM club.....many, many thanks for the good hospitality and amenities.

I'm thinkin' about changing the big sign at Dr. Pirdles' lakes to :  "Flyin' was perfect at Pirdles' Puddle".

Y2K MASTERS  ---  T R E M E N D O U S  ---

Just a brief report on the Masters contest prior to bedtime....(full details later).  36 Entries (35 pilots)....one great guy who entered just for the fellowship and judged and worked and feasted at the banquet.  Modeling needs more folks like NSRCA Dist 3 VP and full-fledged SPA member Bill Harden of Decatur, AL.  Gracious, Bill.

KCRC's orange carpet has never been lusher and more hospitable in all their years of hosting great events....than this one.  They really did reach the epitome of hospitable efforts on this one.  Knoxville's Chamber of Commerce provided IDEAL weather.  It couldn't have been better than this week-end at the "South's Most Scenic Flying Site".

Five rounds of really good flying....mucho fellowship...good grub....the week-end just didn't last long enough!  You know what they say about "time flying when----------, it did"!

More later....gotta go unload the car and get ready for Monday.  Gosh, don't you wish we could back up the clock and relive this past weekend? If I could, I would have slowed down when I failed to notice that Tennessee Trooper in the construction area of Pellissippi Parkway while trying to find Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge. He was a nice Trooper tho, he gave me directions to the Days' Inn along with my pink slip.

KCRC------"ya' shore done good".  Many thanks.

Oh, Ben Oliver (who had broken a lifter-spring on his engine won one of the two OS 91's..... Keith Watson, will replace his G-60 2-S with the other one.  Curt Diggs will have a Daddy-Rabbit to keep his Dirty-Birdy company now as he won the Zimpro DR shortkit.  These guys were most deserving.. congrats winners!

to be continued.......(yawn)

I want to say thanks to just a few of the many people who made this contest a success! Dennis Hunt assistant CD who really ran the contest both days. June Cope who did the scoring with the able assistance of Margaret Hunt. Joe Parrot and his lovely wife Nancy for providing our great barbeque lunch. Jeryl Zarestky, John Heard, Mel Zang, Jim Scarborugh, Craig Haney, Rod Godwin, our transmitter guy Bill and all the KCRC folks who assisted in this event. I know I have missed some folks and my humble apologies to them.

A special thanks to Steve Byrum of Cullman Alabama who furnished the sound system for us.
